Orleans Parish Democratic Party

Welcome to OPDEC, the Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee, the official local arm of The Democratic Party.

AN ELECTION FOR THE 2012-2016 COMMITTEE WAS HELD ON MARCH 24, 2012. UNOFFICIAL ELECTION RESULTS CAN BE FOUND HERE

In accordance with the regulations of the Louisiana Democratic Party www.lademo.org the first organizational meeting of Parish Executive Committees must be held in the parish courthouse at least 28 days before the organizational meeting of the Democratic State Central Committee, which is  currently scheduled for June 2, 2012.

Thus, OPDEC's organizational meeting must be held on or before May 5, 2012, and written notice of the meeting shall be sent to all members 14 days in advance of the date for which the meeting is called.  It is unlikely that the organizational meeting will be held on the first Thursday of April due to the Easter weekend.

The election of officers occurs during the first organizational meeting, at the beginning of which a temporary Chairperson is elected to conduct the election of the Chair. The election of Chair is followed by the election of the 1st Vice Chair, which is conducted by the newly-elected Chair.  The 1st Vice Chair must be of the opposite sex of the Chair.  Other offices elected by a majority of those attending and voting are 2nd Vice Chair, 3rd Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Parliamentarian, and Sergeant at Arms.  The Chaplain is an appointed position and the District Chairs are selected in District caucuses.

The results of the March 24th party leadership elections will be certified and commissions will be sent to the members from the Secretary of State.  A formal Investiture will be held, organized by the new Executive Board.

The election of Delegates to the 2012 Democratic National Committee Convention is an entirely different process, and not connected to the organizational meeting of the Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee.  Qualifying forms for the Delegate Selection are due in Baton Rouge before April 12th and the election is held on Saturday May 5th in various locations.                                                     For more information on the Delegate Selection please go to www.lademo.org
